Moaning in ecstasy

Continuing in the garage-sound vein of the White Stripes, lesbian guitar-drums duo the Moaners are bringing their rich yet pared-down sound to Ohio for three stops.

Touring in support of their ass-kicking debut Dark Snack, Melissa Swingle of Trailer Bride on guitar and her girlfriend Laura King from Grand National on drums take a dark, moody yet no-nonsense approach to rock. The album is great, and seeing them live should be a mindblowing experience.

They're playing February 4 at Comet Bar in Cincinnati, 4579 Hamilton Avenue, 513541-8900. Next weekend, they'll be in Dayton at Elbo's, 200 South Jefferson Street, 937431-3526, on Thursday, February 10, followed the next day by a gig at the Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo, Cleveland, 216-383-1124.

Fangs for the memories

Percy (Joshua D. Brown) falls under the spell of Mary (Sadie Grossman) in the original production of David Hansen's The Vampyres, a Grand Guignol-inflected piece loosely based on John Polidori's The Vampyre.

Hansen's play has been, uh, brought back from the dead for Cleveland Public Theater's Big Box series, and the newly-revised version is being directed by out actordirector-costume designer Alison Hernan, whose efforts in Cleveland theater are the stuff of legend.

Hernan promises a pansexual Bacchanalia in the tale as a young doctor enters a dark and macabre world of sex and death, drawn in as a willing participant in his own destruction.

The Vampyres will play February 4 to 6 at James Levin Theater, Cleveland Public's original upstairs space at 6415 Detroit Ave. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 pm, Sunday is at 3 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling 216-631-2727 ext. 501. -Anthony Glassman
